Press On, Comrades

There’s been a bit of press this season. Leftwing daily Dagens ETC ran an interview with us in anticipation of our summer screening in Höja. Then they also ran a promo/ad for our screening in Katrineholm in August. The magazine published by the national artists’ union, Konstnären, had a piece about us in their latest issue, on the theme of politics&art.

Waiting around the corner is the latest issue of Fält Magazine, soon to be published by Art Lab Gnesta. It includes a lengthy interview with us, and as a special treat the poster that Sara Granér did for us will be included, with important info printed on the back. The poster has been very popular and we ran out of free give-aways almost immediately last summer, so this will be a new chance for those who missed out the first time around. Get a copy of Fält #9 and you get a riso-printed Sunshine Socialist poster for your fridge door as a fine bonus!

Election results are in. You may be wondering whether our presence in the village of Höja in the countryside of northwest Skåne has affected the way people vote there. Has eight years of socialist and environmentalist discourse swayed any minds? Well.

Good news first: the socialist party, V, has doubled their share of the votes, from 1.4 per cent to 3! Bad news then: every other figure shown above. The fascist party (yellow bar) now attracts one third of the voting citizens of Höja. The Green party lost half their local votes, from 4.5 per cent to 2.1.

Of course, this is partly our fault, and we will try to remedy things over the next four years. Hope you stick around!

Poster! Poster!

Artist Sara Granér has drawn a poster for our summer screenings… Check it out!

Drawings and comics by Sara Granér has been published in Swedish newspapers like DN, Aftonbladet, and ETC. Her books are published by Galago. Follow her work on Instagram, here.

The poster will be used to advertise our upcoming screenings, so keep an eye out for it as you wander about in public space.

 

 

The Re-distribution Of Surplus

The Re-distribution Of Surplus is a folder we’ve just printed, containing simple instructions for anyone who wishes to assemble a solarpowered outdoor socialist cinema. We will hand out the first copies this weekend at the Climate Film Festival in Tanto, Stockholm.

The re-distribution of surplus is briefly presented as a sharing of art and culture, and a sharing of knowledge – neither of which is consumed or spent when people make use of them. We are a small-scale operation, with strict limits on what we can afford to take part in, but we are very much open to assisting anyone who wishes to start up another cinema similar to ours.

Printed on a Riso in two layers of soy-based ink. Thanks to Bonnie Fortune and Brett Bloom for introducing us to the wonders of the Riso many years ago!

 

 

Posters

During screenings, we will also try to exhibit posters at various places in the garden. The screenprinted poster showing the technical setup – from solarpanel via battery to projector – comes in two versions:

You can see the influence of Buenos Aires street advertising in our yellow-red screenprinted poster above. Another poster, originally made by Kristina Müntzing for her outdoors installation TO: FROM:, is designed by graphic maestros All The Way To Paris, and features an interview with artist and filmmaker Julian D’Angiolillo. Julian has written the book La Desplaza about the grey economy in Parque Rivadavia, a park in Buenos Aires. This park is where we first came across the Cine Libre Parque Abierto, which was a big influence on our own outdoors cinema. The poster takes the form of a wall-newspaper, and is titled New Rooms For Social Exchange/Intimacy In Public Space.

In future seasons, the cinema will try to commission new posters by invited artists, or exhibit existing works by artists who might fit a given theme. More info on this will appear forthwith!
